A wild gray wolf known as OR-93 that’s been loping around California has now entered Monterey County — the closest it’s been to the Bay Area since it moved south from Modoc County in February, state wildlife officials said Thursday.

The young male wolf was in Monterey County as recently as Thursday, according to GPS collar readings from the California Department of Fish And Wildlife. The wolf’s recent activity marks the first time in roughly 100 years that a wild wolf has been this far south in the state.

California wildlife officials have been tracking the wolf in its migration across the state, which includes stints in Mono County, east of Yosemite National Park, across the Sierra and San Joaquin Valley.

Last week, the wolf was in Fresno and San Benito counties, state wildlife officials said.
