‘Trop volkov se je verjetno odpravljal na lov’ – 24ur.com

Zaposleni v Slovenskih državnih gozdovih je v bližini zaselka Stružnica na Kočevskem naletel na zanimiv prizor. Srečal se je z volkovi, ki mu jih je uspelo fotografirati. Meni, da se je trop najverjetneje odpravljal na lov. Kakšna je pravzaprav možnost, da se pred človekom nenadoma znajde zver in kako nevarno je lahko srečanje?

Ancient Japanese wolf may be rare remnant of ice age wolves | Science | AAAS

JENA, GERMANY—On the island of Honshū in Japan, farmers long appreciated a small gray wolf as a guardian of their crops because its howls warned them of raiders such as wild boars. In folklore, “the Honshū wolf” was seen as a spirit of the forest and honored with shrines. But when the wolves got rabies from dogs in the 19th century, farmers shot and poisoned them until the last wolf died in 1905.

Uncertain future for federal red wolf program near NC coast

With fewer than three dozen red wolves remaining in the wild on the Albemarle Peninsula in Eastern North Carolina, the federal agency that oversees them will consider a change to the existing regulations governing the 30-year-old red wolf recovery program.Supporters of the program that reintroduced the federally endangered animal into the wild said a change to the current rules would imperil their existence. But opponents – many of whom are residents of the peninsula – said they hoped the Red Wolf Recovery Program administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service would soon come to an end. The federal agency manages wildlife refuges and protects federally endangered species.

Wolves attack more calves in northeast Washington – Livestock – Capital Press

Wolves in northern Ferry County have attacked at least two calves and probably two more in the past several days, apparently crossing the threshold for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to consider culling the pack.As of Friday morning, the department had not announced whether the attacks were by a known pack. It also had not issued notice that it will remove wolves. The department has pledged to give one business-day notice before targeting a pack. The notice gives environmental groups time to go to court and seek a restraining order.

Warning issued in Banff National Park after female wolf approaches campers – Red Deer Advocate

BANFF, Alta. — A warning is in effect in Banff National Park after a wolf approached campers in a busy campground.Parks Canada ecologist Jesse Whittington said the warning on the Bow Valley Parkway, which runs between Banff and Lake Louise, was issued this week because a collared wolf entered the Castle Mountain campground at night on Aug. 27.“She searched through several occupied campsites for food and she approached campers to within one metre and then left the campground,” Whittington said in an interview Tuesday.“She did not receive any food rewards, which is great, but her persistent behaviour while people were watching and following her was concerning.“Once wolves and wildlife become conditioned to human food, it’s so hard to change their behaviour.”
